We met over Zoom with 6 people who stutter. For intros, each of us shared a “good news” story that we’ve experienced recently.

To setup the main meeting topic, we talked about how uncommon it is for stuttering to be seen and discussed in popular culture. That led into us into watching a video of three instances where stuttering is being discussed in the public. The video highlights a 1990s pop star, a future music star and a soon-to-be NFL stud wide receiver.

The first video is about  Scatman John, an unlikely international pop star from 1995, and his life-changing relationship with  Gina Waggot. In 2026, Gina published the biography of Scatman John.

The second video shares the story of  Jesse Findling, a contestant on American Idol. Jesse is bringing awareness to stuttering on one of the most watch television shows.

The third video is about  KC Concepcion, a potential first round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. After he auditioned for NFL scouts, KC answered questions from reporters. KC stutters. Unfortunately, some social media haters mocked and ridiculed KC for his stutter.

One theme that emerged from our discussion was how each of us has the opportunity to be a role model for younger people we meet who happen to stutter.
