NOVEMBER 7, 2024

For our November meeting, we welcomed two new attendees. We spent the first part of the meeting doing introductions and sharing our plans for the holidays. Our two new attendees shared more about themselves and how they found our group. A twentysomething attendee sparked good conversation by sharing their current experience with speech therapy that is focusing much less on fluency techniques and much more on being comfortable talking with a stutter.

We then watched two videos that happened to touch upon our earlier conversation.

One video shared the perspective of a teenager who stutters and how they approach school life using modern speech therapy approaches. The other video shared the seasoned perspective of an older adult who stutters. Both videos connected deeply with us.

When I Talk, I Stutter.

The Blank Center for Stuttering is changing how people who stutter view their stutter. They promote open disclosure of one’s stutter and advocate for stuttering voices to be heard. WHEN I TALK, I STUTTER is a six-min video illustrating their approach. It’s powerful and relatable for we who stutter and for anyone who cares about stuttering.

Paula Campbell-Schwab

Paula has been involved with the stuttering community since the early 80s. She co-founded the NSA Houston Chapter in 1985 and was recently inducted into the NSA Hall of Fame. She has a very smart perspective on stuttering and how we who stutter need to learn to love ourselves.
